CREATIVE AUSTRALIA: WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
Professor Julianne Schultz AM FAHA chaired the Federal Government reference group that considered the public submissions in response to Minister Crean’s discussion paper on a National Cultural Policy. In this role she worked closely with the Government and stakeholders in the long process that led to the development of a cultural policy and reshaping of the Australia Council. In the last days of the Gillard Government the Australia Council Bill was passed into law bringing opportunities for greater flexibility and independence. But is it on the right track?
In a wide-ranging reflection on a critical responsibility, Julianne Schultz shares the problems of bringing the arts and government perspectives together, and reflects on the public policy levers that are available to ensure that culture is a more robust pillar of a successful society. Julianne is founding editor of the Griffith Review, chair of AFTRS and is on a number of boards including the ABC and the Grattan Institute.
