Arts & Public Life Breakfast ‘The power of persuasion: how to build a creative city’
David Borger, Lord Mayor of Parramatta, now State MP for Granville, Minister for Roads and Western Sydney
Since becoming Lord Mayor in 1999, he says, his task has been ‘to change the Westie myth that this is a suburban wasteland without artistic activity or opportunity, without wealth or reflection. Old images and snobberies like these are hard to shift.’A Westie himself, who as a child went to ten schools and became a ward of the State in Queensland, he ‘realised that the greatest challenge for a city like Parramatta was to curb the brain drain of our creative young people to the bright lights and urban villages of Sydney.’ In 2005 he announced an extensive plan for finance, infrastructure, cultural industries and community involvement.
