Arts & Public Life Breakfasts 'Arts, Life and Credit Crunches'
Michael Lynch, CBE, ABC Board member, Chief Executive of London's Southbank Centre 2002–2008
Issues of governance are differently managed in London, says Lynch. Lynch’s most notable achievement during this tenure was a major refurbishment of the Royal Festival Hall and the transformation of the 21-acre Southbank Centre site which has since brought a 62% increase in visitors to the new public squares, shops and restaurants. He leaves London disappointed with the failure of the City, in his view, to support the arts. The failure to back worthy causes by those who had benefited from huge salaries during a period of ‘unprecedented excess’ was the thing that had most surprised him during his time in Britain.
